Okay, this took me way longer than I planned but it's finally done. I thought I would do a roundup of the Kindle books that Amazon has on offer this month that I recommend. There are a couple in here that I either own and haven't read yet or that I plan on buying. There's a pretty good selection on offer this month which is why this post took me so damn long. There were some more that I see recommended all the time, so definitely go have a browse, but these are the ones that I've read or bought.
Below Ground by Michael Wood - #11 Matilda Darke*
DCI Darke is kidnapped and it appears someone she put in prison is behind it. Her team has to try and find her whilst also investigating some bones found in an abandoned car.
An over the top crime series packed full of drama and a lovable team. Helps to read in order for the character growth. If you love dramatic crimes and shocking killer reveals this is the series for you.
Left For Dead by Joy Kulver* - #3 Bernadette Noel*
There’s a string of increasingly violent attacks on women. Keira is barely conscious and badly injured but at least she’s alive. Bernadette knows the next woman might not be so lucky. Then her prime suspect dies while on police watch and her superiors won't let her investigate further.
Bernie is such a great character and her personal life is a bit dramatic. Her investigation gets complicated and we have no idea who can be trusted. I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. There’s a great team and Leigh who is an autistic officer was one of my favourites.
A nurse has been murdered and her newborn baby kidnapped on a locked ward in a high security prison for the criminally insane. Dr Connie Woolwine goes undercover and has 5 days to catch the killer.
A creepy setting packed full of suspense as you have no idea who can be trusted. Connie is such an interesting character. Perfect crime thriller for keeping you on the edge of your seat the whole time.
Kisscut by Karin Slaughter - #2 Grant County
A fight at the skating rink turns into a deadly shoot-out. An autopsy reveals evidence of long term abuse and ritualistic self mutation but no one will talk. Then a young girl is abducted revealing the first death to be linked to an even more brutal crime.
If you are a crime thriller fan and haven’t read any of Karin Slaughter's books you are missing out. The Grant County series is what got me hooked on this genre. Incredible characters and you’re kept guessing with plenty of twists and turns.
The Girl in the River by Rita Herron* - #7 Ellie Reeves
Detective Reeves should be enjoying her friend Mia’s wedding. Except the bride is missing and her 6 year old daughter heard a man’s voice before her mum locked her in the bathroom. Then a bridesmaid is found dead in the river. DNA proves that Mia is actually Jesse, a woman who went missing 5 years ago.
I loved the creepy small town in this book. The hunt for Mia is full of suspense and there are so many lies to uncover. Ellie Reeves also has a love triangle going on which isn’t my favourite but adds some drama.
Little Sister by Gytha Lodge* - #4 DCI Jonah Sheens
A teenage girl wanders out of the woods covered in blood. Keely and Nina disappeared from a children’s home a week ago. Keely claims she’s fine but Nina is still missing. Keely insists Jonah has to listen to her story from the beginning before she tells him anything about Nina’s whereabouts. Is she witness, killer or victim
I wanted to trust Keely from the start but I just wasn’t sure if she was lying or not. The twists and turns revealed from her childhood had me equal parts hooked and heartbroken. I am a bit baffled by Jonah's personal life though. I need to read the first 3 books in the series to hopefully make sense of it.
Stolen Ones by Angela Marsons* - #15 Kim Stone
8 year old Grace disappears from her childcare center. At the scene, Kim finds an engraved bracelet belonging to Melody who was taken from a playground 25 years ago. Hours before Steven walked into the police station claiming to have information that would lead Kim to Melody.
This is another fantastic crime series. There are so many amazing characters on the team. Knowing who the bad guy is gives an interesting perspective and there are still enough twists and turns to keep you hooked.
Last Light by Helen Phifer - #3 Lucy Harwin
A woman is found hanging upside down from a crucifix in an abandoned church. Before Lucy has a chance to start the investigation another body is found and it’s the chief’s mother. The evidence uncovers a link to a cold case as well as the church where Lucy’s daughter volunteers.
Helen Phifer has a couple of different crime thriller series and I recommend them all. I haven’t read this book yet but I loved the first two. Lucy is a lovable character and the books are always full of twists and turns
Written in Blood by Chris Carter - #11 Robert Hunter
A proficient pickpocket watches a man be incredibly rude to a customer and decides to teach him a lesson by stealing his bag. It only contains his journal but when she flicks through it she realises it documents horrific murders with names and gruesome details only a killer would know. She hands it over to Hunter's team but the killer is determined to get his journal back.
This series is not for the faint hearted. It is dark and the murders are gruesome. Hunter and Garcia are a fantastic team and I can never put these books down. They are packed full of suspense and I never know what’s going to happen next. This series always has me questioning why I read it because they are so twisted but I am hooked.
Find Her Alive by Diane Saxon* - #1 Jenna Morgan
DS Jenna Morgan is called out to reports of screams in the gorge. When she gets there she finds her sisters severely injured Dalmatian and the tortured body of an unknown woman.
The rare occasion where a detective obeys the rules and doesn’t go off on her own which I loved. I kept second guessing myself on whether I had worked out who the bad guy was. The different POVs add to the tension as well.
Secret Child by Caroline Mitchell - #2 DI Amy Winter
Nicoles 4 year old daughter is kidnapped and she receives 4 identical vials and a note claiming one is poisoned. If she drinks one the kidnapper will let her daughter go. The sender claims to be Luka but he was killed in a fire that haunts everyone involved. Then another child is taken.
This series is so good. Amy is a detective and finds out that not only was she adopted as a child but that her biological parents were serial killers. The crimes always keep you guessing. The team is made up of some great characters and Amy’s family always adds some drama.
Left For Dead by Caroline Mitchell - #3 DI Amy Winter
DI Winter is admiring a valentines window display when she notices blood oozing from the mannequin's mouth. A second victim reveals they were both sugar babes arranging dates with older men. The head of the agency is fascinated with DI Winter and her serial killer family.
Flesh & Blood by Caroline Mitchell - #4 DI Amy Winter
A wave of apparent suicides hits a string of seaside resorts but when a police officer is the latest to die DI Winter suspects the deaths are more than a coincidence. A group of mysterious teenagers might hold the key but they are too scared to talk. Winters serial killer mother has also been released from prison
Alicia had the perfect life until she shoots her husband 5 times in the face and never speaks another word. Theo is a criminal psychologist determined to get Alicia to talk and unravel the mystery.
I have to admit this wasn’t my favourite. I found it a bit slow going but so many people rave about it so now’s the time to get it if you want to see if it’s worth the hype.
Queenie is a 25 year old Jamaican British woman living in London straddling two cultures and feeling like she doesn’t fit into either. A messy breakup causes her to seek comfort in the wrong places and question everything she knows about herself.
This is such a fantastic read. I was really rooting for Queenie and her questionable choices made her feel so human. She’s flawed and just trying to fight her way back to living life. There are some great supporting characters as well as some terrible ones. It covers a lot of deep topics including mental health and the added cultural issues on top, racism, and the way men treat women as sex objects. It’s not the fun Bridget Jones type book it was marketed as but it is an excellent thought provoking read.
Amelia aka Rae Rose is a burned out pop star. She escapes to Rome for a break. Noah runs his grandmothers pie shop. He finds her broken down on his front lawn and lets her stay in his spare room until her car is fixed. He can’t help but get close to her. He vows to show her all the charming small town experiences she's been missing out on before she has to return to life on tour.
I haven’t read any of Sarah Adams books yet but I’ve seen so many people rave about them so I will probably end up buying this one to see if they’re worth the hype. Who doesn’t love a small town grumpy romance.
Eden’s marriage has just ended, her last album was a flop and her upcoming tour isn’t selling. Her team suggests a collaboration with a young up and coming star to give her a boost. Anna has idolized Eden forever and wants to be taken seriously as an artist so a duet with her is a dream come true. Neither of them are ready for the sparks to fly between them.
A cute sapphic romance with a touch of spice. It made me feel all the emotions and was the perfect blend of the joys of love and the hardships of life as well as the experience of coming out later in life. A great group of diverse characters and the character growth was beautiful.
Josie was dumped by a note on the fridge. She meets a guy at a Halloween party and he seems too good to be true. The problem is Josie told a small white lie. She didn’t tell him that her ex broke up with her because she lives with her ex porn star parents and she runs their sex toy empire.
This was such a fun read. I laughed out loud countless times and the romance was super cute. I did love that it focuses a lot on her relationship with her family too. It’s sex positive and there are so many great supporting characters. Josie’s family are just hilarious. A perfect light read.
Mia and Ed have been best friends since they started teaching at the same school. When Mia discovers Ed is a virgin at 28 she offers to teach him the skills he needs to seduce the pretty new teacher. He graduates with an A+ and starts dating Caitlin. But is she as sweet as she seems and are Mia’s feelings stronger than she thought?
I have read 2 books from this author (inc. Great Sexpectations above) and they always crack me up. She is such a great romcom writer. I will be starting this asap and I cannot wait to laugh my way through it.
Third year PhD student Olive is trying to convince her best friend that she’s in a relationship so that she won’t feel guilty about dating her ex. Olive panics and kisses the first person she sees who just happens to be a grumpy professor. She's shocked but grateful when he agrees to be her fake boyfriend.
What is there not to love in this Grumpy/Sunshine, fake dating romance. I love a smart woman protagonist. The romance is adorable, it made me laugh and there’s some spice. There are also some great side characters.
